The Native American flute, or as it’s alternatively known, the “love flute” or “courting flute” has become widely recognised and revered for its distinctive, ethereal sound.
Narratives about the origin of the instrument reveal how different Indigenous peoples of the Americas invented the flute; woodpeckers pecked holes in hollow branches while searching for termites and when the wind blew along the holes the nearby people heard its music.
The late 1960s in the USA saw a roots revival of the Native American flute, with a new wave of flautists and artisans coming to the world music scene. Presently statistics show a 39% annual increase in online presence of Native
American flute music.
