Sindhen Trio Gamelan of Central Java Vol.X
FY8144
Series devoted to Javanese gamelan music gets to Volume Ten, presenting Sindhen Trio which features three appealing female voices Sri Suparsi, Rini Rahayu, Yayuk Sri Rahayu. They sing in a very high quality programme where tradition is recreated in the light of a fine sensitivity to our times.
The first piece is Budheng- Budheng, originally composed sometime between the 18th and 19th century. This gendhing was made to last over a half-hour after a clever and inventive arrangement carried out by Pak Suraji, following a suggestion by John Noise Manis. It proposes an engaging performance of the three singers, with independent vocal lines, instead of the traditional single vocal part. The energy and intensity of the interpretation is admirable, surely a result of great virtuosity and
a capacity for dialogue with the male singers and the instruments of the gamelan. The interplay of the vocal parts is novel and remarkable.
A similar originality in musical arrangement and quality of performance can be found in the third piece of the programme ladrang Kembang Kacang unfolding in brilliant and varied sequences. The piece originated as a popular song, subsequently was used as a gamelan composition, and is presented here in the version arranged by Pak Suraji and Pak Sukamso.
Intentionally placed as an 'intermezzo' between the two vocal pieces is the instrumental gendhing Sawung Galing featuring the 'gender' as the instrument characterizing the composition. Actually, this is supposed to be the only existing 'gendhing gender'. More in general, in Javanese music, the 'gender' is considered as 'the breath of a gamelan' you may not be able to always hear it clearly but you know for sure when it's missing. Sawung Galing is a piece of great beauty, suggestive of refined atmospheres and played on the variety of delicate timbres, with the supporting deep tones of the 'kendhang' drum. The gamelan is played by some of the best musicians of the Surakarta conservatory, with Ibu Pringgo Hadiwiyono being the soloist
on the 'gender'.
The booklet includes the Javanese texts of the vocal pieces with the English translation, which is helpful for a better comprehension of the fascinating music. Also included is an in-depth and interesting
interview with Rahayu Supanggah: the renowned master of Javanese music talks about the gamelan tradition and the ways in which it may be responsibly innovated.
