Bagpipes and bagpipe players from Hungary, Poland, Belarus, Germany,
Bulgaria, Estonia, Macedonia, Mari-El, Slovakia. Recorded between 1970 and
2008 under varying conditions, in studios and in the field.
Central Europe, roughly the area encompassed by the Carpathian Mountains and its bordering regions, has been a crossroads for many different peoples, cultures and commerce. It is known for its unusually rich mixture of ethnic groups, each with its own language and traditions in costume, music, and dance, which are well preserved in certain areas. Many of these cultures have characteristic instruments, and one of the instruments they have in common is the bagpipe, although there is an amazing variety in shapes and sizes. Nine of those bagpipe traditions are documented on this CD.
