Located at the crossroads of age-old nomadic and sedentary traditions, the musical culture of Karakalpakstan in Central Asia is quite distinct from its neighbours, being founded on an epic tradition with two well-defined branches: the baqsı and the jıraw.
The bards G’ayrat O’temur
atov and Azat Seyilxanov take their repertoire from the baqsı tradition. Both accompany themselves on the two-stringed lute duwtar.
The jıraw, of nomadic ancestry, specialize in “heroic” epics, sung in a guttural voice and accompanied by the qobız fiddle, while the baqsı in their songs refer to the world of the court and palaces, and celebrate courtly love.
