Dale King is one of the finest harmonica players of the entire blues scene – and more than that: He is also an outstanding singer, guitar player and songwriter. He got into Elvis and Johnny Cash at a very early age, influences that are still clearly discernible in the warm baritone voice that sets him apart from many white blues shouters.
Growing up in LA in the late Sixties, the thriving music scene turned him on to the blues and the harmonica. He cites Jimmie Reed and Paul Butterfield as his biggest blues influences. Soon, he began writing his own songs – heavily influenced by Bob Dylan, as most everyone in that era.
A virtuoso harmonica player, Dale King more often than not chooses to use his instrument as a “soundshaping” tool. Trains, farm animals, all the sounds black harp players imitated are clearly audible in his solos. On no other instrument can notes and sounds be shaped and colored in such an organic, intuitive way. Dale King is a master of that art.
