A unique ensemble, in which all the beauty of the eastern gamelan instruments has been translated into western tuning.
Combined with violin and (bass)-clarinet a rich and extraordinary sound idiom arises.
All the music for Multifoon is especially written or arranged. Both Dutch as well as foreign composers have written numerous pieces especially for this ensemble. Sometimes for a particular project, such as with saxophones, but often for the bare bones formation of Multifoon.
The Ensemble is made up of a steady group of five percussionists who play on the gamelan instruments. Several programs also include a violinist and a (bass)-clarinetist.
For the enlargement and completion of the orchestra subsidies were awarded by the Prins Bernhard Fund and the Kersjes van de Groenekan Fund. In May of 2001 the Concertgebouw Orchestra made use of the chromatic gamelan in a new composition by Peter Schat entitled The Gamelan Symphony.
