Gerard Dole became interested in American folk music in his teens during a stay in the Southern United States. Later on in Paris, he decided to set up a band totally devoted to Cajun and Creole Music. It was the very first one of its kind in France and was quickly in great demand. During the summer of 1975, he embarked on a liner bound for New York, then travelled by rail down to Louisiana where he visited such renowned Cajun or Creole old-timers as Dennis McGee and Sady Courville, Cyprien Landreneau, Fremont Fontenot, Eraste Carrière. He also became acquainted with the Balfa Brothers, Nathan Abshire, Marc Savoy, Michael Doucet, and made tapes of their wonderful music. Many musicians played with Gerard Dole in the next thirty years and this long adventure allowed him to find his own identity in the heart of Cajun music. Living now for the best part of the year in his small wooden house of Grand Anse near Lafayette, he considers himself as a Francadian, that is to say a French musician who devotes himself to the Acadian style while striving to bring to it an extra dimension and a personal touch. As Marc Savoy once said, « we don't need old songs performed in a new style, but rather new songs performed in the old style.
