OEDO SUKEROKU TAIKO In Japan no festival is complete without the deep-sounding drums known as taiko (or daiko). Taiko are heard in many types of Japanese music and have accompanied all sorts of festivities and ceremonies in the archipelago since time immemorial. On stage OEDO SUKEROKU TAIKO recreates the atmosphere of such celebrations, with the excitement of the processions bearing the mikoshi (portable shrine) through the streets of the city, and with meditative pieces in tribute to the awakening of nature, with the blossoming of the plum trees at the end of winter. Created in 1959 by Seido Kobayashi, OEDO SUKEROKU TAIKO was the very first professional taiko group, the first ensemble consisting solely of Japanese drums.
