Our collection of millenary music from Central Java, curated by John Noise Manis, is now enriched with two new arrivals in the series: Vol. XII (Pangkur One) and Vol. XIII (Pangkur Two). These two CDs, which complement each other, show the regenerative capacity of the music of Pangkur, a classic theme in Javanese tradition.

The roots are set back in sung poetry, a genre called måcåpat. Through a transformation process of various pre-existent melodies the theme can be performed within different forms and in various ways. In the first volume, Pangkur is presented in the full gamelan orchestra in four performances, each one characterised by different style and intonation. Performers are musicians of the Institute of the Arts (ISI) of Surakarta, except the second track, which is played by an ensemble of Yogyakarta. The second volume presents various types of reduced gamelan formations (rebab, gendèr barung, kendhang, gendèr panerus, gambang, suling, kenong and gong). The ten tracks include the root-melodies (måcåpat) and the corresponding gamelan compositions deriving from them, attesting to the extreme versatility of Pangkur in the Javanese repertoire.
Both CDs ensure an extraordinary listening experience, flowing as a continuum composed by distinctive pictures. If in the first the magic of the entire gamelan sound structure is intact in its traditional strength, the second one strikes for the beauty of the rarefied sound, of the moving melodies, of the female and male voices intertwined. Pangkur One and Pangkur Two are indeed further evidence of how the music of Java is capable of dwelling, with vibrant emotion, in a timeless dimension.
