Zukva - Sevdah from Bosnia's Finest (CD)

Zukva is a collection of urban and traditional music from WOMEX favourites, Bosnian group, Divanhana. Divanhana perform traditional music in new arrangements which are the result of a fusion of jazz, pop and 20th century classical music. Zukva combines traditional urban music from Bosnia and Herzegovina and the whole Balkan region, with a particular accent on sevdah.
Sevdah or sevdalinka music is the romantic and spirited Bosnian equivalent of Portuguese fado. Like fado, sevdah expresses itself within the sad romantic moods of love lost and passion gained, comparable to saudade. While ‘sevdah’ itself derives from the Turkish word for ‘love sickness’, the album Zukva lingers only momentarily on love lost, being more a musical feast of Balkan fusion. Sejdefu Majka Budjase is a song from the older style of sevdah song while Oj Safete, Sajo, Sarajlijo is from the new generation of sevdah.
Zukva opens up both the traditional elements of sevdah to a new jazz sensibility, while the clear tones of Leila Ćatić’s voice deftly span the emotions from heartache to playfulness. Interestingly enough, the Zukva itself is a small apple tree with hardy roots that grows in Bosnia and Herzegovina on crooked trees. The zukva cannot be transplanted, but can be successfuly grafted onto other types of apples. Comparatively, musical traditions from Bosnia and Herzegovina on the album Zukva have been fused with jazzy, modern elements.
Vocalist Leila Ćatić performs effortlessly on Zukva’s journey. Emina is a stand-out vocal performance of a dramatic song in contrast to the lighter side of love as in Oj Safete, Sajo, Sarajlijo. While Da sam ptica showcases singer Leila Ćatić’s perfect vocal vibrato and has the band in full infectious swing with clarinet, kontra (lute), violin, guitar, cajon and bass.
Divanhana’s members are: Leila Ćatić, Neven Tunjić, Nedžad Mušović, Azur Imamović, Rifet Čamdžić and Irfan Tahirović. The word ‘Divanhana’ itself is combination of ‘divan’- a large seat where people are sitting and talking, and ‘han’ - a place where people gather sometimes, so essentially ‘Divanhana’ equates to a meeting place for people.
Divanhana was formed at the beginning of 2009 by a group of young students from Sarajevo’s Music Academy and released their debut album in 2011, produced by renowned world music producer, Walter Quintus. Divanhana are festival favourites in Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia.
In 2012, Divanhana was invited to take part in the prestigious ‘12 Points’ jazz festival in Porto and later that year they were selected to perform at WOMEX (World Music Expo) in Thessaloniki. Zukva is a fine expression of something old fused with something new from the world of Balkan fusion.
