The Drum Patterns of the Nepal Tibetan Lhamo Association (CD)

Traditionally in Tibetan Opera, Lhamo in Tibetan, the music section consists of drum and cymbals. The drum player is the "master of ceremonies". He/she has at his disposal a number of different drum patterns, with which he/she controls the movemenst of the dancers/singers on stage. Through fieldwork in the years 2012 -2019 Bernard Kleikamp made an inventory of these patterns at the Nepal Tibetan Lhamo Association (NTLA) from Boudhanath, a suburb of Kathmandu, the first time ever that such an inventory was made. He cooperated with Tenzin Namgyal, the music teacher at the NTLA, who played most of the patterns in isolation. A few patterns were taken from live recordings of the complete NTLA.
