Gamelan of Central Java Vol.XI Music of Remembrance
FY8145
The XI. volume devoted to the gamelan music of Central Java focuses on a particular theme: remembrance. It attempts to define and present a musical repertoire that the Javanese call upon when commemorating the dead. John Noise Manis informs in the introductory note of the CD that while in Western cultures the subject is generally dealt with pieces of classical music which have a somber
character, in the culture of Central Java the question is more complicated. For one thing, there is the notion that the music should not necessarily be sad: in fact this, for some people, should be avoided because it could attract malevolent spirits who would bring further damage and deaths. For these people the music should rather be serene and well-wishing, evoking the benevolent spirits who would be inclined to accompany the souls of the deceased and protect the living. But fact is that there is not a unitary common notion and attitude on the matter. Each community and social group tends to
adopt its own custom and the search for new musical expressions is fairly common.
This CD presents a number of pieces that are, more than any other, connected with remembrance in Java. Some of them may sound coherent with the Western idea of remembrance music. The bowed-stringed instrument 'rebab' is predominant as it leads the three splendid female voices of Sri Suparsi, Rini Rahayu, and Yayuk Sri Rahayu, as well as the male voices. Special mention deserve the opening piece,
'Layu-Layu', and the closing one, 'Laler Menggeng', both of agonizing beauty. The instrumental piece 'Wilujeng Alus' is to be noted as one of the most frequently played when commemorating musicians. The booklet has the English translation of the Javanese texts. It also includes a note by the composer Nicola Campogrande on the power of seduction of the gamelan toward Western musicians.
