The encounter between Mozart's Requiem and Tibetan rituals at the 1996 Stuttgarter HOF Konzerte was lauded as the musical "event of the century". These were groundbreaking concerts that shattered all musical taboos. The powerful, deep voices of twelve Tibetan Monks of Tashi Dhargye Monastery interspersed with the "sacred" sounds of Mozart´s Requiem. The Stuttgarter Philharmoniker under Jörg-Peter Weigle, almost one hundred singers of the Württembergisches Kammerchor and the Chor der Staatlichen Hochschule für Musik together with the Tibetan monks who had flown in specially, following intensive preparation, inspired each other to new musical heights: "spelling out" Mozart's Requiem anew to resound with a rarely known intensity, stripping it of the cloying superficiality it had long since developed as a mere item of musical consumption. The Tibetans, on the other hand, meditate at five points within the requiem, with a fullness of sound that Lama Doboom Tulku has described as "the fullness of the universe that banishes fear". The monks of the gelupga tradition sing mantras from the Yamantaka and Mahakala rituals in güyome style, with texts that correspond to those of the Christian requiem. The Tibetan rituals, too, have their Dies Irae or Day of Wrath, their Lacrimosa of mercy and grace, their Sanctus of praise and their hymn to Eternal Light. These are fascinating correspondences that can be heard and experienced here for the very first time. This encounter of Gregorian chant, performed by the Schola Gregoriana der Domkirche St Eberhard in Stuttgart under Prof. Martin Dücker. Network has digitally recorded this world premier which is now released as an exclusive double CD (containing an 80-page illustrated booklet) with a personal dedication from the Dalai Lama.
