Kacapi suling, played on two box zithers (kacapi) and a flute (suling), is one of the main styles of music found in the Sunda areas of western Java. As we hear on this recording, it has a bewitching charm.
The kacapi is a plucked box zither. It has 18 or more metal strings, which are stretched lengthwise over the soundboard. At one end they are attached to tuning-pegs. Fine tuning is achieved by adjusting the moveable wooden pyramids over which each string passes.
There are two sizes, known as kacapi indung (‘mother zither’) and kacapi rincak (‘child \ zither’); they are played together. The suling (bamboo flute) has a characteristically wide diversity of playing styles. On this recording, it is used to play a contemplative type of music.
