Atzilut Music for the Kabbala (2CD)
EUCD2010
Traditional and original music from the Hebrew mystical tradition and its spiritual poetry.
From Ashkenazic cantorial chant to Yemenite communal refrains, texts about ecstatic experience have always been sung in the widely-dispersed Jewish communities of the pre-Western world. Atzilut performs both traditional and original music for the journey.
The growing repertoire of the group is grounded in extensive research, reaching back into Oriental, Sephardic and Hasidic sources for melodies and texts. The group's sound, enhanced by original composition, is a rich fusion; a true world-music which is reflected in the ensemble's unusual instrumentation: tabla (a pair of Indian drums), tamboura (bowed lyre of the Middle East and Arabia), African djembe (drum), udu (clay pot drum), congas, dumbek (goblet drum of Turkey), flute, electrified viola, English horn, oboe, bowed bass, bass clarinet, Spanish guitar and voice.
Music for the Kabbala
Mystical visions are a universal part of human life. The Jewish record of these experiences begins in Biblical literature, and continues through the centuries in ecstatic poetry and teachings of spiritual masters. Kabbala ('the receiving'), the Jewish mystical tradition, describes a reality far beyond everyday perception. The goal of Kabbala is the transformation of our broken reality into one of pure, unified joy.
