Riccardo Tesi Banditaliana (CD)
FY8022
Virtuoso of the melodeon composer and ethnomusicologist Riccardo TESI boasts over twenty years of experience as a musician during which time he has ranged from the folk music of Sardinia and the Langue D’Oc countries region to that of England, the Basque countries, Madagascar and India, as well as collaborating with musicians from other fields such as the great jazzman Gianluigi Trovesi and singer-songwriters of the calibre of Fabrizio De André and Ivano Fossati.
For his latest work, TESI has taken inspiration from his own region of Tuscany reuniting several of the area’s most notable musicians (Maurizio Geri, Ettore Bonafé, Claudio Carboni) players who are able to cross genre boundaries with ease to give body to TESI’s vision. On Banditaliana you can hear a kaleidoscope of sonorities running from Tuscany folk music to jazz to the music of the Mediterranean to African rhythms. The result is a music that is highly expressive and deeply involving, arranged with gusto and refinement, enjoyable and artful at the same time.
Moving to the tracks themselves, Maggio derives from the repertoire of singer Caterina Bueno, with whom TESI began his career; Tre sorelle is a sentimental ballad taken from the folkloric heritage of the pistoiese region; Anita is the Italian version of a provençal song arranged by Patrick Vaillant; Tarantella Rouge & Noir adds a jazz tinge to the sound of the noted southern Italian dance; Tevakh and Vento del Madagascar are both the fruit of TESI’s collaboration with Madagascan vliha virtuoso Justin Vali.
Recorded in celebration of the first twenty years of Riccardo TESI’s artistic career, Banditaliana is without doubt a seminal work in the ambit of World Music, one which makes an important contribution in defining Modern Italian folk music, and which, without renouncing the values of its traditional musical heritage, sits comfortably alongside the most up-to-date world sounds.
