This CD includes historical recordings made over a period of more than thirty years in the same villages, and reflect the musical folklore of the villages of the Psel River basin in its traditional and modern forms. Characteristic instruments for this region are the kugikly (panpipes), and the rozhok (a reed instrument). The kugykly is only played here, and is played by women only. They play kugikly in small ensembles of three to five persons, each holding a set from two to five loose pipes and interweaving their parts in a cross-rhythmic pattern. In addition to this already intricate texture, some women add vocal sounds similar to bird calls in between the sounds of their pipes. Most recordings were made during several field expeditions by Prof. Vyacheslav Shchurov, who also wrote the liner notes. Olga Velitchkina, specialist in the kugykly traditions, was instrumental in editing and translating the liner notes.
