Folkabola Jolla Pipiola - Tarantelle Siciliane (CD)
FY8201
The four members of the of the group FOLKABOLA come from Avola (South Sicily): Corrado Confalonieri plays the accordion, Giuseppe Magnano acoustic guitar and vocals, Claudio Lanza the frame drums and Sebastiano Nanè the friscalettu (small wooden whistle).
It is precisely this last instrument of the ancient Sicilian peasant culture to arouse curiosity and to be almost always in evidence during their performances. It is a small reed flute that was used during breaks at work in the farms, where it happened that, spontaneously, each took an instrument and would begin to play.
The repertoire is based mainly on folk songs taken from texts of musicologists Sicilians, like Solomon Marino, Alberto Favara, Pitre, Leopoldo Mastrigli and Corrado Ferrara. Complete the repertoire some unissued old compositions, coming for archives and original compositions that composed in the same, traditional vein.
At times, a concession to modernity, pop up some small contamination at rhythmic level: time in five-eighths or seven-eighths, not common in the Mediterranean tradition.
The group evokes both spontaneous musical moments of the Sicilian people of the late nineteenth / early twentieth century, in the courtyards of the farms during their working break, and the ancient tradition of Fistinu, small feast organized in the evenings, or other everyday moments of a past almost forgotten. The need is to bring back to life the wonderful acoustic effect of spontaneous groups that existed in the farms of Sicily during the various working seasons not to mention the songs of love and carritteri (cart drivers).
Quite rare thing among existing groups in Sicily, members of the group are both musicians and singers. This allows you to bring back to life the sounds and simplicity of the small instrumental ensemble that, as reported in various texts of the era, animated with a vast repertoire everyday life of the Sicilian people, sometimes deteriorated to the present day from the contamination of other organic forms instrumental and modern music.
The performances are generally carried out in sound for the sake of the holidays in restored farmhouses in the area of Eastern Sicily.
FOLKABOLA The group was founded in 2000 by a group of four musicians who for years collaborated with reality folklore of Sicily and in particular with the groups of the province of Syracuse, participating in various tours all over the world.
Sebastiano Nanè, the leader of the group, after studying classical flute, met Salvino Parentignoti from the group Avola Folk who invited him to try the Sicilian friscalettu. Then Maestro Carmelo Angelica from Rosso Almo (RG) gave Sebastian the first friscalettu, especially made for him, and so began the recovery of Jolle and tarantellas.
