What's this noise I'm hearing? Peasant polyphony #3: traditional songs, dances and rituals of the Russian people.
All the songs, dances and rituals on this CD are performed just as they were sung and danced by peasants in the villages where they were recorded. The majority of these songs are transcribed by Irina Raspópova. This CD aims at presenting a multifaceted repertoire of folk songs from all over Russia, allowing the listener to enjoy it, and to realize that the Russian folk culture may be the richest folk culture in the world. The songs are authentic, i.e. not arranged to comply with a specific taste.
The use of the voice in Russian traditional singing differs from Western traditions, but shows a lot of similarity with other non-Western singing traditions, like the Arabic and Turkish, and is often embellished with melismatas. In many songs the singers use mixed registers with a lot of nasalisation. 8-page booklet, 64+ min.
