“Hiwaya” (desire, passion, destiny…): a meeting of two cultures, sometimes melancholy, sometimes joyful, but constantly showing mutual respect. An operatic aria is Easternised, a Baroque ground bass supports the heartrending lament of an Arabic poem, a Moroccan song takes on black African colours, the ’ûd becomes a banjo, the guitar a sanza, the cello a viola da gamba, and the whole is punctuated here and there with quotations from Western hits.
“Hiwaya” is a polysemic word that can be variously translated as “desire”, “passion”, “project”, “destiny”… terms that are meaningful to us in our work as members of Djuwel.
Our repertoire consists essentially of music from the Arab-Andalusian heritage of Algiers, but it also includes some original compositions. Habib Guerroumi is the heir to and original interpreter of a long tradition; he is also very interested in and open to other types of music. His approach lies at the origin of our trio, which revisits Arab-Andalusian music, while showing perfect respect for the rhythmic and modal structure of the works. With the guitar and cello, we propose a different viewpoint, a counterpoint, a movement back and forth between tradition and modernity, classicism and avant-garde, East and West. With this second album, we have endeavoured to take the mixture of different traditions even further by including a theme written by Monteverdi, an aria from an opera by Bizet, and some almost subliminal quotations that we will leave you to discover for yourselves. Hiwaya: a meeting of two cultures, sometimes melancholy, sometimes joyful, but constantly showing mutual respect.
