The music of the Shakuhachi is a very slow, stretched melody, which never falls apart, even if there are long pauses between the sounds. The single “soundwords” seem to be independent elements, formed by the dramatic art of tension and relaxation. The slowness demands full presence by the player, in order to stay with the music and not to run off the track. The music can be regarded more as a condition, than a sequence, a story.
From the beginning, the Shakuhachi tradition pays particular attention to the practice of oneself with the instrument. The musician trains himself in order to become permeable for the music. The compositions should be practiced well, to prevent the musician standing in his own way by thinking about how to perform the piece.
