The Folk Group Os Lusitanos of Saint-Cyr l’École was formed in 1992 with the aim of bringing to a wide audience the songs and dances of the region around Ponte de Lima in northern Portugal. Its members were originally brought together by the Portuguese-French Cultural Association of Saint-Cyr l’École, which was created with the aim of finding people who were interested in performing Portuguese folk music. The present director of the group (and the last of the founders still in activity) is Luis Esteves. He is assisted by his son, Flavio Esteves, who is the group’s répétiteur. The ensemble, representing the people who work in the fields, is composed of fifty dancers, men and women, accompanied by fifteen musicians – diatonic accordion, cavaquinho (a plucked lute, midway between a guitar and a mandolin), viola braguesa (a 10-strings guitar typical of north-western Portugal around the town of Braga), castanets, triangle, drums, tambourine, reco-reco (wooden scraper), three solo vocalists and chorus. This recording testifies to the rich, lively, joyful musical heritage of the Minho region.
