Wabang Ulodi (CD)

Wabanag is a four piece band featuring Yovan Nagwetch (lead vocals, flutes, percussion), Juha Jokiranta (guitars, vocals), Daithì O'Cleright (drums), Ivo Baric (bass, vocals). The band was founded at the initiative of Yovan Nagwetch a Canadian Metis of Wabanaki ancestry who moved in the 90s to Finland.
Yovan's family emigrated to Europe in the beginning of the 70s. He grew up in France where he started to compose French songs while he was only a teenager. He then took part in several musical projects and got trained with ex-Magma lead singer Klaus Blasquiz and with Congolese drummer Henri Samba.
In Finland, he found a positive environment to develop his native music project through which he explores the musical heritage of his Wabanaki ancestors. The result was the release of the album ULODI (Box, Finland) in 2004 that was well acclaimed by the press and the pubic, despite the fact the music was foreig to Finnish hears and the language used for the songs unknown. It consists of twelve songs, most of them composed by Yovan and two being traditional Wabanaki songs.
Like Yovan the music is "metisse": traditional in inspiration, modern in expression. It uses stones, seeds, framedrums, musical bows and native flutes, which together with intense vocals create a unique organic sound enriched by the guitar and bass lines. Experts will find similarities with the new Sami music of Marie Boine and Ulla Pirttijarvi.
If the studio has allowed a more traditional / ethnic sound, live performances of Wabanag are definitely "wild". This is world music that rocks and puts a spell on the audience, drinving the listener to the "bush", the land of Ligmoes and Manitu, the Forest Great Spirits.
