The ûd player Hussein El Masry also has immense talent as a composer and arranger, as may be seen from this recording, made in Cairo with some of the finest musicians in the land. Instrumental. Hussein El Masry, who was born in 1952 into a music-loving family in Cairo, spent his early years steeped in popular Egyptian music. That led him to follow studies at the Institute of Arab Music in Cairo, where he obtained his diplomas in composition and musical theory in 1975. After completing his technical and classical training, he decided to travel, in order to broaden his field of knowledge and inspiration, and in 1977 he settled in Paris. His abilities as a composer led him to try out various experiences. Successively, he composed and interpreted music for films, for the theatre and made his first solo recordings in 1981. At the same time, he carried out research into the historical ties between the ùd and the lute, the ùd and the classical guitar, the ùd and the indian sitâr. He broke new ground by giving the first lute recital in Cairo, where the ùd is generally only used within the framework of classisal training. This diversity rules out any concessions to facilty. Hussein El Masry likes to think of himself above all as a creator; over and above his superb technique, his originality lies in the balanced co-existence of a respect for tradition and a creative curiosity. El Masry is classical without austerity, modern without giving in to fashion ; like a felucca, he goes as he pleases along rivers that are sometimes distant, but which nevertheless always inevitably carry him back to the Nile.
