Yulia sings, plays chatkhan, and sings in the khay overtone singing style on this CD.
Yulia Charkova was born in 1987 as the oldest daughter of Khakas musician and instrument builder Sergey Charkov and his Sakha (Yakut) wife Lyubov Sidorova, who often sang the Yakut sarongs at home. Her talent for dance and music was fostered in Studio Chas Khanat (Young Wings) in Abakan, and in music school, where she studied classical violin and piano. In passing, she taught herself to play the jews harp. After her basic music education, her father took her training in traditional music at hand. He instructed her in traditional Khakas singing, chatkhan zither, and yykh fiddle. Yulia: “What he gave me? The whole tradition! He also taught me how to combine voice and instrument and taught me to listen.“
Some years later Yulia and her father established the duo Khyrkhaas. Together they toured Poland, the United Kingdom, Japan, Belgium, and The Netherlands.
