Chico Buarque is the sensual king of Brazilian pop, master of bossa nova and samba and still one of the most important figures in the Brazilian and World Music scene.
Born in Rio de Janeiro on 1944, Buarque’s music al career started to take off in the mid-1960’s as he entered his twenties. Initially uncontroversial, he moved into more political writing and ended up in jail in the 1968. On release he moved to Italy for a year before returning to Brazil as the decade turned.
This marked the second phase of Buarque’s career – an extremely successful and prolific time captured in the 40 tracks featured on this collection. In this period he wrote songs of social and political protest and frequently collaborated with other stars of this golden era, including Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso and Milton Nascimento.
