This album presents “classics” of Hawaian music, by composers of renown, including King Kalakaua, Queen Liliuokalani, Prince Leleiohoku, Kaimanahila and others. This lively music, with the authentic sound of Hawaiian guitars, was recorded in Hawaii some thirty years ago.
The first Hawaiian to learn to play a string instrument was probably Prince Humehume (son of Kaumualii, king of Kauai), who was taught to play the cello by missionaries on the island in about 1820. The first guitars appeared around the same time, brought to the coasts of Hawaii by whalers.
Ten years later, King Kamehameha III hired Spanish and Mexican cowboys to teach the Hawaiians their skills on the cattle ranches; they brought with them their guitars. The islanders were immediately drawn to the instrument, which they adapted to their own style of playing. The Hawaiian instrument is a lap steel guitar: it is played on the lap by pressing a steel bar against the strings.

Michael H. Golden, director of Criterion Music Corporation, kindly gave us permission to use these recordings; the instrumentation was completed in Tahiti by Yves Roche, who added a traditional vibraphone, pahu drums, and percussion instruments, such as the hue (calabash), heard in some of the pieces.
